Us presentem un recull selectiu de les publicacions existents sobre materials i serveis d'informació gais, lèsbics, bisexuals, transgènere i queer (GLBTQ) en biblioteques i arxius. La bibliografia s'organitza per tipologies documentals i els articles de revista, com d'altres contribucions, temàticament.
Es tracta d'una primera aproximació selectiva, encara en revisió, a les fonts publicades sobre el tema, feta amb la voluntat que vagi creixent amb les vostres aportacions.

RESUM: S'analitza una selecció d'exemplars d'obres de narrativa juvenil amb contingut GLBT que figuren en 9 biblioteques públiques del Canadà, amb la intenció de mesurar l'accés i determinar si existeix cap evidència de prejudicis per part dels seleccionadors. S'identifiquen 35 títols publicats entre 1998 i 2002, que van atreure un 34% menys de ressenyes per títol, si es compara amb un grup de control, seleccionat a l'atzar, de narrativa juvenil sense contingut GLBT. De promig, les biblioteques tenen menys exemplars dels títols GLBT que de títols de la llista de control. Per bé que el resultats no permeten concloure cap evidència de prejudici en els seleccionadors, sembla clar que les biblioteques tenen tendència a adquirir molts més exemplars de la llista de títols de control que no de temàtica GLBT, i que l'accés a aquests exemplars varia segons la localització de la biblioteca.

Es considera el panorama d’aquest aspecte en la literatura que roman sense canvis i agraeix l’atenció que, avui dia, donen a aquest tema les associacions de bibliotecaris. Tot i estar aparentment invisible en la literatura, es subratlla l’existència de llistes accessibles per a adolescents GLBT, les quals es converteixen en bibliografies de punt de partida.

RESUM: Es tracta la necessitat de facilitar materials adequats a les biblioteques escolars que ofereixen suport als gais i lesbianes adolescents. D’entre els temes tractats s’inclouen: la presentació de models a imitar –a obres de narrativa així com a biografies– la diversitat religiosa, la confidencialitat en el préstec de documents i temes de censura. S’argumenta la importància de mantenir una col·lecció important i actualitzada de materials que atenguin les necessitats dels gais i lesbianes adolescents i la necessitat que els bibliotecaris es familiaritzin amb biografies i llibres de ficció que continguin models GLBT positius. S’adverteix de les conseqüències d’una censura vers aquest tipus de materials.

Acompanya l'article amb una anàlisi de la representació del fet homosexual en la literatura infantil i juvenil.

RESUM: Per bé que el nombre de llibres per a joves en els quals l’homosexualitat és el tema o en els quals apareixen personatges gais o lesbianes ha augmentat des de la dècada de 1960, pocs en són de realment apropiats per als joves o per a lectors iniciats. Les imatges de gais i lesbianes que apareixen en aquests llibres són, generalment, conservadores i la bisexualitat quasi s’ignora. La majoria dels llibres tracten més l’homosexualitat masculina que la femenina. L’accés a aquests llibres és un problema tant a les biblioteques escolars com a les públiques. Es presenta un projecte que, sota el títol Out of the Closet and Into the Classroom: Homosexuality in Literature for Young People [Fora de l’armari i dins la classe: l’homosexualitat en la literatura juvenil], es va iniciar l’any 1989 i consisteix en identificar els llibres disponibles per a joves, en els quals apareguin gais, lesbianes i bisexuals com a personatges o en els quals es tractin temes relacionats amb l’homosexualitat. Un segon objectiu és estudiar l’accés dels joves a aquest tipus de llibres a través de les seves biblioteques escolars o públiques. La majoria de llibres són novel·les per a adolescents, tot i que també es troben contes infantils. Aquests últims estan dirigits bàsicament, tot i que no exclusivament, a infants que creixen en famílies de pares gais o de mares lesbianes. En termes generals, sembla ser que, per diverses raons, els joves no poden tenir un accés ràpid a molts d’aquest llibres.

RESUM: Revisió de les obres de narrativa juvenil en biblioteques escolars i públiques en les quals aparegui tractat el tema de l’homosexualitat o apareguin personatges gais i lesbianes. Es descriu el treball de recopilació de bibliografia Out of the Closet and Into the Classroom: Homosexuality in Literature for Young People [Fora de l’armari i dins la classe: l’homosexualitat en la literatura juvenil], publicat el 1996, i es destaquen els mecanismes emprats per identificar i localitzar novel·les rellevants i contes infantils il·lustrats. Es comenta el rol dels personatges gais i lesbianes a les novel·les i als contes infantils i com en són representats. S’examina com els joves poden accedir a aquestes obres i es discuteixen els models de gestió de la col·lecció d'obres de ficció i els efectes de la censura, així com les pressions legislatives en alguns països a l’hora d’incloure aquest tipus de llibres en les col·leccions públiques. S’assenyalen els factors que poden afectar l’accés i s’indiquen les futures possibles àrees de recerca. L’evidència indica que la porta de l’armari és a mig obrir.

RESUM: S'analitza el nivell del servei de referència que vint professionals de biblioteca pública donen als joves i els adolescents en la regió metropolitana de Vancouver (Canadà) davant de qüestions relacionades amb informació i documentació GLBT. Mitjançant el mètode d'observació indirecta, en el qual s'instrueix una usuària tipus que és qui s'adreça directament als taulells d'informació, es fan les preguntes i es recullen les dades. Es conclou que, malgrat les limitacions de l'estudi i que en la major part dels casos la comunicació i la conducta dels bibliotecaris ha estat efectiva, davant de les preguntes relacionades amb informació GLBT per a joves, cal millorar el coneixement que els bibliotecaris tenen del fons existent en les biblioteques i els recursos (educatius, socials) de què disposa la comunitat, com el coneixement de les necessitats d'informació reals dels usuaris GLBT i els aspectes relacionats amb la confidencialitat de les respostes.

RESUM: L’aparició de gais i lesbianes en el món dels llibres per a lectors joves ha avançat poc en els darrers 25 anys als Estats Unitst d'Amèrica i la censura cap a aquests materials amb contingut gai o lèsbic orientat a joves sembla augmentar de manera dramàtica. El resultat d’aquesta pressió en augment sobre els editors ha donat lloc a una forma d’autocensura, en què escriptors i editors fan tot el possible per evitar l’aparició del fet homosexual en les obres. La por al mercat també juga el seu paper: els editors i escriptors dubten d’escriure o publicar llibres que, tot i ser clarament demanats, siguin en el millor dels casos un risc financer i en els pitjor una invitació a reaccions violentes per part de grups homòfobs.

RESUM: Text de la comunicació presentat, originàriament, al congrés Defining print culture for youth, que va tenir lloc el maig de 1997 a la Wisconsin University. Des de que la primera novel·la juvenil amb contingut GLBT va aparèixer l’any 1969, s’han publicat fins al 1997 aproximadament un centenar de títols. Partint de la recerca realitzada en l’anàlisi del contingut, es faciliten tres aproximacions teòriques per entendre l’evolució d’aquest subgènere, aproximant-se al treball de Gerda Lerner, Rudine Sims Bishop i George Chauncey. Es conclou subratllant els temes i les pautes que suggereixen el progrés que s’ha anant realitzant i el que, encara, cal anar fent en la representació realista de joves GLBT en la novel·la juvenil.

RESUM: L'objectiu d'aquest estudi va ser determinar si els joves, o d'altres grups interessats en la literatura juvenil, havien tingut accés a través de les biblioteques públiques a novel·les amb contingut homosexual. Es va confrontar una mostra aleatòria de 40 novel·les juvenils, en llengua anglesa i amb contingut gai i lèsbic, amb el fons bibliogràfic de 40 biblioteques públiques, mitjanes i grans, del Canadà, que tenien els catàlegs accessible a distància. El nombre mig de títols a totes les biblioteques va ser de 16,2 (40,4%). No es va trobar cap relació significativa entre les dimensions de la biblioteca i el nombre de títols que tenien (r=0,302; CV0,05(38)=0,311). Els resultats d'aquest estudi suggereixen que, tot i que alguns bibliotecaris sembla ser que fan bé la seva feina, facilitant aquests títols potencialment controvertits, d'altres no ho fan. S'inclouen recomanacions per a futures recerques.

Es va comprovar el nombre de títols i el nombre d'exemplars disponibles en 101 sistemes bibliotecaris públics dels Estats Units d'Amèrica i el Canadà, amb alguns representatius de Nova Zelanda, Austràlia i el Regne Unit. La comparació en el nombre d'exemplars entre els diferents sistemes bibliotecaris mostren diferències molt grans. De manera similar, les comparacions entre els títols mostra que algunes obres són molt més comprades que d'altres; hi ha un patró d'increment en el nombre d'exemplars quan hi ha un augment del nombre de revisions bibliogràfiques d'aquestes obres en les principals revistes professionals.

RESUM: Librarianship is a feminized profession, and like teaching, nursing, and social work with which it shares the occupational traits of a ‘‘semi-profession,’’ its low status and prestige have been attributed to a negative feminine image. To date, discussion of a corresponding male librarian image, general male issues, and the broader topic of gender issues has been minimal within the profession, while serious discussion of gay male librarians and their professional identity has been virtually nil. This study compares the responses of straight and self-identified gay males to an exploratory survey of male members of the American Library Association. The topics covered by the survey include reasons for entry into the field, the existence and identity of a male librarian stereotype, and gender issues generally, including gender stratification of work and sexual discrimination and/or harassment. Self-identified gay subjects share many characteristics in common with the straight cohort, including the identification of a gay male stereotype and some denial surrounding gender equity issues. On the other hand, the tentative findings of this exploratory study raise the question of whether both gay and straight male subjects overestimate the number of gay men in librarianship. The report concludes with an update on gay issues within the profession since the survey was completed, and recommendations for further research.

RESUM: Els actes homosexuals han estat criminalitzats universalment en totes les cultures, però només a partir dels moviments socials moderns del segle XX -especialment des de la IIa Guerra Mundial- la reivindicació dels drets del col·lectiu GLBT s'ha convertit en el focus de pressions humanitàries per legitimar la diversitat sexual. Als Estats Units, un país considerat durant molt de temps capdavanter en la lluita pels drets humans, la lluita per la igualtat gai i lèsbica ha esdevingut problemàtica per causa de les antipaties religioses. L'American Library Association s'ha compromès activament en la lluita per la llibertat intel·lectual des d'aproximadament el 1939, i el 1970, es convertia en la primera associació professional del món en formar un grup professional gai i lèsbic. Because the library has focused largely on traditional middle-class library patrons, nontraditional library users such as racial and ethnic minorities, the elderly, and the disabled, have been tragically under-served.The gay, lesbian and bisexual population in America is yet another group of under- served library patrons, experiencing many of the same obstacles to library services that America's other special populations face. Discrimination against sexual minorities and ignorance about the presence of gays, lesbians and bisexuals in library service communities, as well as the specialized information needs of this population, can negatively affect the provision of library services in general, and collection development activities in particular.This paper discusses the gay, lesbian and bisexual population of America and their status as library patrons, their information needs, selection tools to assist in the acquisition of appropriate materials, collection methods, and the special challenges that collecting for this special population may present.

This would ensure satisfaction of the broadest range of individual reading needs while assuming and demonstrating a broad tolerance for everyone's reading tastes.

RESUM: La comunitat lèsbica, gai, bisexual i transgènere (LGBT) ha estat una població a la qual, històricament, les biblioteques no han sabut servir adequadament. Es presenten els resultats i l'anàlisi d'una enquesta a la comunitat LGBT de Denver (Colorado) sobre les necessitats d'informació durant i després el procés de descobriment de la pròpia sexualitat i de sortida de l'armari i l'ús de diversos recursos comparats en la provisió d'informació LGBT. Els resultats mostren que la comunitat LGBT utilitzaba molt més els serveis d'informació del centre d'atenció comunitària i les llibreries GLBT que no pas les biblioteques per buscar la informació. Es compara l'ús de les fonts d'informació tradicionals amb l'ús de la informació oral i d'internet.

RESUM: It is a popular practice for US public libraries to have a table located in the entrance area of the library designated as a free to the public area on which groups outside the library may ask for and be granted permission to place materials to be freely used by members of the public. Such libraries need to be aware of the legal aspects of such areas in case material that is allowed to be displayed causes offence to sectors of the public. Illustrates the legal aspects of free to the public areas by means of the case of Vidalia Public Library, part of the Ohoopee Regional Library System, Georgia, USA, which granted permission to the placing of copies of The Gay Guardian, a free newspaper focusing on issues of interest to the gay and lesbian community of South Central Georgia. Objections were raised by members of the public, leading to the removal of the material. This triggered a lengthy lawsuit by the newspaper owner/publisher against the public library authority, alleging violation of his First Amendment rights, which led to a legal ruling concerning the legal status of free to the public areas.

Declares that Section 28 of the Local Government Act of 1988 constitutes blanket censorship and should be the subject of an appeal since it specifically prohibits the flow of positive information about gay and lesbian persons. Discusses the impact of this legislation on the gay and lesbian community.

RESUM: Exposa com la comunitat gai masculina d'Edmonton (Canadà) percep l'Edmonton Public Library (EPL) en termes d'informació i materials per a gais. Les dades es van recollir mitjançant un qüestionari autoadministrat; 46 persones van respondre l'enquesta, dels quals 36 havien estat usuaris de l'EPL durant l'any previ i 25 havien cercat informació relativa a temes gais. Durant l'etapa de descobriment de la pròpia sexualitat, la biblioteca pública esdevenia el recurs més significatiu per a l'obtenció d'informació sobre homosexualitat, encara que molts estaven descontents amb la informació i els materials disponibles a l'EPL. Les propostes de millora estan orientades a l'increment dels materials GLBT; la provisió d'informació gai més actual, i la subscripció a revistes GLBT. L'EPL recull obres força actuals i aparentment pertinents, però els resultats de l'enquesta suggereixen que els homes gais no serien conscients del seu abast i de la seva qualitat.

RESUM: Gay men and lesbians have made dramatic progress in gaining civil rights and social acceptance in the years since the end of World War 2; but, libraries and indexing services have not kept pace with the growing need for gay and lesbian information. Describes a project which identified a small core group of gay and lesbian titles that are indexed and available in libraries, making them accessible to the average library user. Still, most gay and lesbian journals are avoided by indexers and collection development librarians, indicating a need for further pressure from ALA's Gay, Lesbian and Bisexual Task Force and enlightened publishers, patrons, and librarians.

Discusses the theoretical foundations for gay and lesbian archives and libraries, together with the way in which their mission statements reflect concerns for their history, heritage and the need to correct the past neglect of the gay and lesbian role in society. The problems faced by the archives and libraries include funding and that they rely mainly on volunteer help. Much of the pre 1960s material is in danger of deterioration and of being lost since there is not adequate cataloguing and listing of documents. There is a need for national databases of collections, networking, and digitization.

RESUM: This article reports on a case study of library holdings, using Canadian census data, with the census metropolitan area (CMA) as the unit of analysis. In particular, we focused on a question, introduced for the first time in the 2001 census, which asked gay and lesbian common-law couples to self-identify. Statistics Canada reports these data at the CMA level. We identified 83 public libraries whose service areas corresponded to the boundaries of the CMAs and which had on-line, publicly accessible and searchable English-language catalogues. We evaluated these libraries' holdings of the 38 adult, lesbian fiction titles that won Lambda Literary Awards from 1988 to 2002. We found significant relationships (at the 0.01 level) between (1) the number of Lambda Award-winning lesbian titles held by the public libraries whose service area corresponded with a given CMA and the number of same-sex couples as a percentage of all couples in that CMA, and (2) the number of copies held by the public libraries whose service area corresponded with a given CMA and the absolute.

RESUM: Reports results of a questionnaire survey of users of the Lesbian, Gay and Bisexual Collection (LGB), located in and shared between Brighton Central Library and nearby Hove Central Library, UK, to determine who uses it, reasons for use, what resources are used and the benefits of having a separate and centralized collection. Questionnaires were made available at the two libraries with sealed boxes provided in which to deposit responses to ensure anonymity and confidentiality and were available during November and December 1997. 44 completed questionnaires were received and the results were analyzed using SPSS. The importance of the Collection to the LGB community was confirmed but the view that such collections also serve the wider community could not be supported from the profile of respondents. Concludes that separate collections aid information access and that concerns of 'ghettoization' seem unfounded. A centralized collection increases access and availability and bibliographies aid access and possibly lead to greater use. Most respondents use the LGB Collection for recreational use, particularly fiction, highlighting a gap in the research literature and showing that even advocates of LGB Collections have underestimated this need.

RESUM: It is the proper function of New Zealand libraries to provide affirmative and empowering information to minority groups such as lesbians and gay men, and it is also a part of the ethical obligations of professional librarians. Examines impediments and political obstacles, such as censorship and the Indecent Publications Tribunal, to the provision of service, but suggests that there are indications that gay and lesbian readers will be better served in the future, and that the selection tools exist for the development of a collection to serve their needs. Also discusses materials not likely to be collected by public libraries such as those available in the Lesbian and Gay Rights Resource Centre. Stresses the importance for libraries of making current information available on AIDS, and of retiring out-of-date information on the subject.

Asks, what is a librarian to do about public displays of affection, cruising, and public sex? Suggests that first they read up on the issue, though unfortunately problem user library literature is spotted with vivid illustrations of irrational bias against gay men, male to female transgender women, and men-cruising-men. It also discounts the private nature of most consensual sex in public places. Discusses sex and gender biases in library literature, arguing that gender equitable, privacy respecting practices will better serve librarians administering public space.

Not so. Gay literature is not readily available in bookshops, and although at least 1 copy of each major work on homosexuality is held in NZ libraries, these are often obsolete or inaccurate. Presents an annotated list of 17 books prepared by Wellington Gay Liberation and essential for modest collections, and notes on selection of, and access to gay material. A large bibliography of bibliographies, non-fiction, biography, fiction and periodicals is appended, works being recommended for public, academic and college of education libraries.

RESUM: Objectius: Obtenir fets bàsics i considerar les opinions dels professionals de l'atenció de salut i dels estudiants (no-bibliotecaris i bibliotecaris) sobre les necessitats d'informació dels professionals de la salut gai, lesbianes, bisexuals i transgènere (GLBT) i la seva interacció amb bibliotecaris mèdics. Mètodes: l'instrument d'enquesta era un qüestionari basat en el web. Una mostra no aleatòria de professionals de la salut i d'estudiants (bibliotecaris i no-bibliotecaris) va ser obtinguda a través de missatges adreçats a uns quants grups de discussió a internet (GLBT i generals) i a membres seleccionats aleatòriament de la Gay and Lesbian Medical Association. Es van anallitzar un total de 152 formularis amb aproximadament un 50% dels participants que eren persones GLBT. Resultats: Les persones GLBT tenen necessitats d'informació i preocupacions específiques en l'àmbit de la salut. Més d'un 75% de bibliotecaris mèdics i d'estudiants consideraven que les persones GLBT tenen necessitats d'informació especials, amb índexs de resposta similars per a professionals de salut no-bibliotecaris i estudiants. La provisió de serveis d'informació ha de dur-se a terme amb confidencialitat i respecte pels sentiments de l'usuari. Les àrees principals de necessitat són els temes relacionats amb l'atenció sanitària, el càncer, la depressió i el suïcidi en l'adolescència, l'adopció, la salut i les pràctiques sexuals, les infeccions per VIH, l'acollida d'infants, temes de salut mental, temes de salut relativa als transgènere, violència de gènere, i pèrdua de la parella. Conclusions: La majoria dels professionals de la salut GLBT requereixen serveis d'informació sanitària adequats. Oferir recursos d'informació sanitària orientats a GLBT mitjançant la pàgina web de la biblioteca i fer un esforç per mostrar-se respectuosos amb la diversitat cultural a través de la comunicació pot ser de gran utilitat. L'educació dirigida a infondre una consciència del col·lectiu GLBT en la societat també és aconsellable. La majoria dels participants en l'enquesta fan ús dels serveis de consulta d'informació sanitària i consideren que els bibliotecaris mèdics els han estat molt útils en la provisió d'informació.

Es van estudiar quatre tipus d'entorns d'assistència sanitària: Oficina d'Assistència Sanitària Primària (BPHC) -amb el suport dels centres d'assistència sanitària a la comunitat, que reben finançament federal per a la prevenció de les infeccions per VIH i pels serveis d'atenció; centres de salut per a gais i lesbianes; centres de salut per a dones i centres del BPHC no relacionats amb el VIH. Malgrat que els serveis d'informació i la informació sobre el VIH/Sida estaven àmpliament disponibles per al públic en general als quatre tipus de centres estudiats, la informació adaptada a la població corresponent a lesbianes i dones bisexuals només es facilitava en menys d'un terç dels centres restants. Basada en el treball realitzat per la Gay and Lesbian Medical Association i els estudiosos de la Universitat de Columbia, aquest document de treball exposa les línies generals de les preocupacions sanitàries de les persones GLBT. A paper given during Workshop 1: Community archives, traces the history since 1997 of the Gay and Lesbian Archives of South Africa (GALA). Some of its collections date back to the 1940s. Based on a paper presented at the 1998 KnowHow conference in Amsterdam, gives 5 examples of different types of materials in which lesbian lives are recorded in GALA's holdings. Largely undocumented by its very nature in South Africa, notes the sensitivity required of archivists in handling lesbian activism, particularly oral history projects.

In the past, many communities in South Africa were excluded from official history books and from the institutions of public culture, such as museums and archives. The Gay and Lesbian Archives (GALA) was established in order to recover and preserve a hidden history. One of the most challenging components of the archives is an oral history project, which aims to collect life histories and other oral sources from diverse communities. Looks at a particular case study - the Hope and Unity Metropolitan Community Church - to illustrate how indispensable the oral record is to the collection and representation of gay and lesbian experience.

RESUM: Contribution to a special issue devoted to ethical issues in Southern African archives and libraries. The Gay and Lesbian Archives of South Africa (GALA) obtained access to a series of police files on homosexuality. As these files are of historical value they were taken into the custody of the National Archives of South Africa. Records of this nature raise ethical concerns particularly relating to privacy. Such issues are addressed in the Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA), but certain ambiguities are open to interpretation, a matter taken up by the National Archives. Both legal and ethical considerations are put to the test when granting access to records where personal privacy rights may be infringed on.

Hypothesizes that negative attitudes toward homosexuality would act as a barrier to attention to news about AIDS. Lower attention to news about AIDS was predicted by negative attitudes toward homosexuality, conservative AIDS policy attitudes, lower perceived risk of getting AIDS, in addition to being male, older, white, and better educated. The model predicted media attention for men rather than for women.

RESUM: The popularity of Internet communities has raised the question of how they relate to offline communities. Yet there has been hardly any research that focuses on this question. Examines the relationship between online and offline communities through a case study of the community formed on a bulletin board on the world-wide web and the women's group in Hong Kong, the Queer Sisters, who created the board. Finds that the community formed on the bulletin board is largely autonomous in relation to the offline group. Informed by "medium theory", highlights the social potential of the Internet in forming communities. Also argues, however, that contingent conditions have an important influence on whether online communities are autonomous in relation to the offline communities.

RESUM: This article is an account of a Usenet newsgroup whose participants, in response to a perceived "invasion" of "barbarians", explored and articulated the value of the group, the nature of the crisis facing it, and the strategies available to meet the crisis. The newsgroup facilitated political and personal support for some gay, lesbian, or bisexual men and women. The primary threat to the group was the increasing number of newcomers who were oblivious to established norms, who tended to view access to the group as a commodity, and who attempted to impose "outside" paradigms on the operations of the group. Defensive strategies involved calling on rhetorical devices (such as flaming or ostracism) or structural resources (such as employers, network operators, or lawsuits). All strategies had the potential to backfire, but rhetorical strategies were less risky, more available, and more community affirming than strategies requiring access to structural resources. Through this account, the article addresses the mutual linkages and dependencies between the social and technical organization of computer-mediated communication (CMC) networks, the community-building activities taking place through those networks, and the social, legal, and economic structures in which those networks are embedded.

RESUM: Online surveillance interferes with the individual's ability to control their expressive identity - to determine the scope of the social context in which their activities are to be seen and interpreted. Entrepreneurs have responded to these concerns by offering pseudonymizers, which employ cryptographic techniques to allow users to create several unlinkable personae and choose among them when engaging in various online interactions. This article investigates the tension between pseudonymity as a design paradigm for privacy technologies and as a lived practice for users. Because coming out - strategic revelation and the claiming of identity - has been at the core of the gay liberation movement, this article posits a politically and sexually active gay professional man as an ideal user of pseudonymity software, and places the design logic of pseudonymity within that particular set of social understandings. It reveals the conflicts, contradictions and trade-offs inherent in that use. Pseudonymity permits a very strong control of identity. It permits the user to segregate his public performances, and to engage in public debate without fear of bodily retribution. However, it is all but useless as a means of controlling the social context of those performances. It requires that decisions about self-presentation in certain contexts be made in ignorance of who is sharing that context, and with what resources or purpose. While it promotes the production of multiple selves, those selves are not easily lent to practices of intimacy or community. Pseudonymity also facilitates profiling practices that define and reify classes of people, even as it protects the individual from some of the repercussions of being defined as part of that class. In short, pseudonymity software is informed by a politics of heroics rather than of community.

RESUM: The rise of the internet has tremendous impacts on homosexual communities in Taiwan. The internet has created a medium where homosexual people can form virtual communities to seek for emotional support without fearing the disclosure of their sexual preferences and causing unwanted negative consequences. The internet has become a medium where homosexual communities can share information with each other and voice their concerns to the public. Thus, the internet may become what Ithiel de Sola Pool (1984) called 'the technology of freedom' for homosexual communities. The purposes of this paper are set to discuss whether academic homosexual individuals perceive the internet to be more fair and impartial in terms of news reporting than traditional mass media and to investigate why they use the internet. This paper employs a questionnaire survey method to collect data for the questions. The quantitative analysis of survey data (N=701), from a self-completed questionnaire using modified snowball sampling of gays and lesbians from Taiwan. Principal component analysis with varimax rotation led to seven factors that account for 66.31% of the variance. These factors are social interaction and information, entertainment and relaxation, personal revelation, preference, privacy and escapism, pass time and, novelty-seeking. Correlation analyses also suggested that respondents' demographics, internet usage frequency and, time are associated with their use motivation. As an exploratory study of an academic homosexual population and their internet use behaviour in Taiwan, this study raised more questions than it intended to answer. The use of individual media by this group needs further study.
